NBT-AQL 2025 workshop schedule & registration for Grade 12s

Nasionale Normtoetse (NNT) Akademiese Geletterdheid (AKG): Registrasie vir werkswinkels

Future university students, did you know? Depending on your chosen course and university, you may be required to take the National Benchmark Tests (NBT), opening on 1 April 2025. At certain South African universities, their results serve as additional entrance criteria.

We can help you prepare, as these tests are quite different from those you are used to.

HOW TO BOOK: To arrange for an AQL (Academic and Quantitative Literacy) workshop presented by LCaT in the language of your choice for R745, contact Professor Alert Weideman: albert@lcat.design or 0827733787.

Can you handle advanced grammar?

How good is your grammar? Grammar is how words fit together in sentences. Here are some tests to check whether you understand where in a sentence an appropriate noun, adjective, verb, preposition or other kinds of words, like conjunctions — those words whose function is to link parts of a sentence — fit.

The result of this kind of test is usually very similar to that which we get from a much longer test, so it can represent a first, rough measure of competence.

The tests have been so arranged as to start with easier ones (associated with the A level on the Common European Framework of Reference or CEFR), and gradually become more difficult (in line with the B and ultimately C level). We are trying them out, which is why they are called pilot tests. We’d like to see whether in reality they progress from easy to difficult. They will challenge your knowledge of grammar and relations between parts of a text!

Have fun with them! Your results will be visible immediately. And if you want to make further enquiries, write us an e-mail.

“Die oom se kursus” …

Vra Prof. Albert Weideman vir ‘n leerder van Montana:

“Nou hoe beland jy hier op die Oos-Moot Hoërskool se Akademiese geletterdheidswerkswinkel?”

Oom, my niggie sê al haar maats het destyds beter as sy gevaar op die NBT-toetse. Toe sy vra nou hoekom verskil die punte so, het haar maats gesê dis oor hulle daai oom se werkswinkel bygewoon het. So my niggie se raad was: vind die oom, en woon sy kursus by! Dis hoekom ek nou hier is. 🙂

Ons vertrou dat dit goed sal gaan met vanjaar se AKG-toets. Sterkte!

Ons help jou om daar te kom

The book really helped and showed how they [the NBTs] would ask questions, so I knew what to expect, especially after doing all five of the tests. I think that everyone should do some work to prepare as it is a test unlike any normal test at school.

Your book helped a lot – it gave me a lot of confidence. The AQL paper went well yesterday …  I’ll be sure to recommend it to other students.

NBT AQL preparation: yes or no?

Can you prepare?

Can or should you prepare for the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) component of the National Benchmark Tests? Of course you can. Why would you not prepare? Why would you not seek to become familiar with the unusual format of such tests? Why would you not grasp the opportunity to gain an understanding of what academic literacy means? If you do an example test and check the correct answers, you will certainly develop your ability to use academic language. And that ability is exactly what the AQL component tests!
