The well-known Academic Word List (AWL) was developed by Dr Averil Coxhead. This word list is also used in the vocabulary sections of the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) required by universities, as well as in a book of practice tests and answers for Grade 12s entitled Academic literacy: Five new tests.
DOWNLOAD Coxhead’s Academic Word List 2000 in Excel containing 570 head words. The first worksheet lists the words in alphabetical order, whilst the second worksheet is arranged according to frequency of usage (level one=most used; level 10=least used).
For more information and updates on the AWL (head- and sublists) visit the Victoria University of Wellington website.
